The main benefits of fish oil
- Healthier skin and coat : The Omega fatty acids found in fish oil help maintain healthy skin and promote a shinier, healthier coat. This is especially beneficial for dogs with dry or irritated skin, as well as excessive hair loss.
- Anti-inflammatory effects for joint health : Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a component of Omega-3 fatty acids, has anti-inflammatory properties that help dogs suffering from arthritis, joint pain, or other types of inflammation. It can help improve joint mobility and reduce pain in older dogs or dogs with joint problems. Fish oil can also be a great preventative support for your dog’s joint health.
- Heart Health and Immunity Boosting : Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) helps maintain cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation in blood vessels and improving blood circulation. This may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Fish oil helps strengthen the immune system, which is especially important for your dog's resistance to various infections and other diseases.
- Brain development and cognitive function : Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supports brain development in puppies and maintains cognitive health in older dogs.
What to consider when choosing fish oil for your dog?
- Omega-3 Amount: Pay attention to the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil - the main purpose of fish oil in dog nutrition is to provide the dog's body with these fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential because the dog's body cannot synthesize them itself, so they must be consumed through diet. Although Omega-6 fatty acids, like Omega-3, are also essential, they can also be consumed through plant products. The optimal amount of Omega-3 fatty acids is 75-100 mg EPA/DHA per kg of animal weight
- Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratio: The most important aspect of a dog’s diet is maintaining the right balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The ideal ratio ranges from about 2.6:1 to 26:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3. A balanced amount of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is important because these fatty acids are metabolized into substances that affect inflammation. Omega-3s are considered less inflammatory than Omega-6s. An imbalanced amount of fatty acids can contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, which is linked to the development of certain diseases, such as obesity, cancer, and diabetes.
- Product quality : Make sure the fish oil comes from high-quality fish, such as salmon, sardines, or anchovies, as these fish are higher in Omega-3 fatty acids. It’s also a good idea to choose a fish oil formulated specifically for dogs. Human fish oil products often contain flavorings and other additives that can be harmful to dogs.
Use and storage
- Appropriate oil dosage: Different fish oil products may have different concentrations, so always check the manufacturer's dosage recommendations. Please note that the dosages indicated on the packaging are indicative. Different dogs require different doses depending on their needs and the level of Omega-3 in their diet. To be sure of the most appropriate dosage for your dog, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian who is knowledgeable in canine nutrition. Remember that too much fish oil can cause unwanted side effects, such as vomiting, diarrhea or weight gain!
- Duration of use: It is best to use fish oil as a course. The duration of the course is 60 days or 2 months and it is advisable to repeat the course 2 times a year. In case of chronic diseases, it can also be used continuously.
- Proper storage: Fish oils are sensitive to oxidation and light and can quickly spoil if stored incorrectly. Fish oil should be stored in a dark, cool place (such as the refrigerator) as light and heat can accelerate the oxidation of the oil and cause it to spoil. Choose an airtight container or tightly closed bottle for storage to prevent oxygen from entering the package, which can also accelerate the oxidation process. Fish oil should be used within 2 months of opening the package.
The story of veterinarian Anna Lapoška's experience
“ I regularly use fish oil for my dog to maintain healthy skin and coat. I choose Essential Foods fish oil because it contains significantly more Omega-3 fatty acids than the products sold in veterinary pharmacies. I use it as a course - 2 months 2 times a year with a six-month interval and I recommend it to others too! :) ”
